The Story of Siddhartha—Documentary
The Buddha tells the story of an Indian sage who sat under a fig tree 2,500 years ago. The Buddha never claimed to be God or God’s emissary on earth. He was a human being who, in a world of pain and unavoidable suffering, found a serenity that he taught others to find also.
With original animation woven in throughout, The Buddha draws upon paintings and sculptures across two millenia as well as scenes in India today that echo the Buddha’s world of long ago.
The testimony of contemporary Buddhists, including Pulitzer-prize winning author WS Merwin and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, provide insight into the ancient narrative.
This 2010 documentary was originally prepared for and shown on PBS Television.
